Read Serenity's Story (In Memoriam)
Serenity was enslaved at the dairy industry where she had many babies taken from her before she herself was sent to slaughter. Luckily we saved her from slaughter and three weeks later she gave birth to her son Rumi at The Gentle Barn. Serenity was terrified that we would take her son away and kept standing over him every time she heard a human voice. We kept reassuring her that he belonged to her and she would have him for the rest of her life. She finally believed us and began trusting us five years later when her son was much bigger than her, still nursing, and she finally allowed us to pet and hug her.
At the age of eighteen, Serenity developed a mass on her spine which made it impossible to walk or stand up. We helped her transition out of her body with our staff, other cows, and her son standing beside her. We are so very grateful that we were able to keep our promises to her and she was able to experience human kindness for ten years at The Gentle Barn! May all moms raise their babies, may all babies grow up to be loved and protected, and may all beings know peace and kindness!
