California:

  • Purchase/Redeem Tickets:
  • Visiting on Sunday:
    • What hours are you open on Sundays?

      10am-2pm

    • Do I need to show up at a certain time between 10am-2pm?

No, you can come in anytime between the hours of 10am-2pm.

    • Do I need to sign up for a certain time for the upper barnyard?

No, you will be given a hand stamp which will designate your time to enter the upper barnyard area, so it all depends on what time you arrive. The upper barnyard area opens to a certain number of visitors at a given time. It is open at 11am, 12pm and 1pm. The lower barnyard area opens at 10am.

    • Do we get to interact with the animals?

Yes! We will have volunteers stationed all over the property to help you give treats to our horses, brush our cows, hold our chickens, give our pigs tummy rubs, and play with our goats and sheep. They will personally introduce you to all our animals and share their stories of rescue and recovery.

    • Do you accept credit cards?

Yes, we accept credit cards, cash and checks in all areas of our property.

    • Do you have food available for purchase?

We have a snack shop open with plenty of snacks, drinks and a hotdog vendor with plant-based hotdogs available for purchase.

    • Can we bring our own food on Sundays?

Yes, as long as the food/drinks are free of meat, dairy, poultry or fish.

    • Can we bring food for the animals?

Yes, you are more than welcome to bring food for the animals, however, you will not be able to feed the animals the food you bring. You will drop the food off at the front entrance and will receive yellow tickets for you to take to the snack shop where you will get a bag of carrots to feed to the horses. There normally is no feeding allowed in the upper barnyard, so you are welcome to donate fruit and leave it with us at the front entrance and we will be sure the animals get your treats during the week!

    • Does it get really crowded on Sundays?

It all depends on the weather and time of year, but we ensure that all areas, including the animal enclosures are not overcrowded, so that the animals and visitors are not overwhelmed.

    • What if the forecast shows possible rain for a Sunday that we’re planning to visit?

If it is a light sprinkle, drizzle or cloudy then we will remain open on Sunday. If it is a hard downpour then we will most likely close to the public. You can always check our social media pages such as Facebook or Instagram, or you can also call us Sunday morning to see if we have changed our voicemail to state that we are closed. *If we are closed on Sunday due to the rain and you already purchased tickets then please use your emailed ticket and/or receipt on another Sunday between 10-2pm within 30 days.

  • Volunteering/Internship:
    • I want to become a volunteer; how do I start?

To be considered as a volunteer, we ask that you first come on a Sunday as a visitor when we're open to the public from 10am-2pm, watch one of our presentations, which usually runs every hour, starting around 11am. There is normally one at 11a, 12p and 1p. You'll need to fill out a volunteer application and turn it in with our Volunteer Coordinator, Kiera, after the presentation is over. **Please be sure to arrive around 30 minutes earlier than the presentation time so you have time to park, check in at the front and fill out the application prior to the presentation.

You won't start volunteering that day, but we will follow up with a phone call sometime in the following week after your visit so we can let you know the specifics on duties, days and times that we may have available for you.

    • What if I cannot make it on a Sunday to fill out the volunteer application?

We currently do not have any other days to come in to start the application process, so you would need to come in on a Sunday first to sign up.

    • How old do you have to be to volunteer?

Our minimum age to volunteer is 14 years old.

    • What days/times can I volunteer?

All our new volunteers who are under 18 years old can only volunteer on Sundays and it’s a 9:30am-3pm shift. If you are 18 and over, then we do have volunteering opportunities in our office during the week. If you are wanting to volunteer with our animals during the week, we require training with us in advance.

    • What is required of me as a volunteer?

You do not need any prior experience to volunteer in the office or on Sundays during our public hours.

    • Is there any training involved?

If you are volunteering on a Sunday then there is no prior training involved. If you are wanting to volunteer during the week in the barnyard or with our horses, we require that you train with us at least 4 consecutive Sundays and 4 additional weeks of training during the week before you are given a shift. In order to be considered for a shift during the week after your training is complete, we ask for a once-a-week commitment for at least a year after training.

    • Do you have any on-site accommodations for people from out of state/town?

Unfortunately, we do not have any on-site accommodations, however, there are local hotels down the road from us or in Valencia, CA.

    • Do you have an internship program?

Yes, if you can commit to intern with us for a month or more, then you may be a good fit for our internship program. We have you fill out an emailed application, interview you in person or via Skype, and if it all works out you can intern with us for a month or more at either our Knoxville, TN or Santa Clarita, CA locations. Please contact us with your request and we'll get you started!

Tennessee:

  • Purchase/Redeem Tickets:
  • Visiting on Sunday:
  • Volunteering/Internship:
    • I want to become a volunteer; how do I start?

The first step to volunteering with us is to come visit on a Saturday while we are open to the public. You can purchase tickets for your visit at www.gentlebarn.org/Tennessee. While you are here for your visit you will be able to complete a volunteer application and meet with Andrea so you can interview and we can provide you with more details.

    • What is required of me as a volunteer? Is there any training involved?

A season pass is a $60 donation for an individual pass and is good for up to one year from the date that you purchase it. It allows the following: free entry during our public hours for up to a year and no waiting in line. You can also look into our other season pass levels HERE.

It also includes the following: 10% off all Gentle Barn events, our weekly newsletter and also includes some merchandise depending on what level of membership you purchase. You can look into purchasing a membership HERE. These memberships do not apply to getting in free during our public hours.

    • How do I make a donation in honor of someone and get you to notify them?

We do mail out cards in honor of birthdays or other special occasions. In order to process this type of gift, you can donate under the "Memorial/In Honor Of" donation section of our donate page through our website. You can enter the amount, recipient’s name, (skip pets name) and you can also include a message. Before you click on Donate Now, be sure to either select:

“Send card to me so that I may give it to the recipient directly”

      OR

“Send card to recipient at the provided address” (for this second option the recipient will receive a card shortly after that!)

    • I want to purchase tickets as a gift for someone, how do I do that?

  • Animal Sponsorship/Monthly Reoccurring Donations:
    • How do I sponsor an animal?

You can do this by visiting our website and clicking either on the California tab HERE or the Tennessee tab HERE for either location’s "Virtual Barn". From there, you can choose which animal you would like to sponsor. Each animal has a sponsorship amount, which is indicated under their bio, by their photo. If you click on the "Sponsor for __" button under the chosen animal's bio, you can set up a monthly sponsorship.

When we receive a sponsorship donation, a packet is sent out with the animal’s photo, bio and a certificate of sponsorship, so you will receive yours shortly after that!

    • How does the donation of an animal sponsorship work?

Once a sponsorship is set up, you will be charged on the same day each month (the day you set up the sponsorship). This will be an ongoing charge for the life of the animal or until you decide to cancel it.

    • Can I sponsor an animal with a one-time donation? How?

Yes, and it must be for the total amount of 6 months or more.

Select which animal you would like to sponsor from our Virtual Barn on our website and then add up what the donation would be for either 6 months or more. After that, you have 2 options:

      1. You can make a general donation of the lump sum using a credit card through our website under the "One-time Donation" section and once you're at the Checkout page, just be sure to specify in the “Order Notes” section that the donation is for sponsorship of an animal, state the name of the animal, and that it is for 6 months or more.

      OR

      2. You can mail in a check of the lump sum. Just be sure to write on a separate note that the check is for sponsorship of an animal, state the name of the animal, and that it is for 6 months or more. *Be sure to include an email, that way we can send you an update on your sponsored friend.

Once you have done either way, we will send out a sponsorship packet with the chosen animal's bio, picture and a certificate with your name on it.

    • How do I update my credit card information for my monthly donation/sponsorship?

In order to update any credit card information, there are two different ways:

      1. If you know that you set it up using PayPal, then you would need to log into your PayPal account directly or contact them to update your billing information.
      2. If you know that the donation was not set up using your PayPal info then please go into one of your old monthly emailed receipts and in that email you will click on the link where it states “Update your billing information” and follow the steps it guides you through.

Once you have completed the steps and submitted all your new information then you will be all set.

    • How do I cancel my monthly donation/sponsorship?

In order to cancel any monthly donation, there are two different ways:

      1. If you know that you set it up using PayPal, then you would need to log into your PayPal account directly or contact them to cancel the account on their end.
      2. If you know that the donation was not set up using your PayPal info then please go into one of your old monthly emailed receipts and in that email you will click on the link where it states “Cancel this subscription” and follow the steps it guides you through.

Once you have completed the steps either way, then you will be all set.
