We just rescued a pregnant cow and her baby from being sent to slaughter in Tennessee. We can't wait to show them how wonderful their lives will be in sanctuary—and we need your help! In honor of The Gentle Barn founder Ellie Laks' 54th birthday this week, we're holding a naming auction.
With the passing of Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh, Ellie would love to see names inspired by the things he dedicated his life to like peace, love, and mindfulness.
Thank you all for your support and participation. This was not only a successful fundraiser but also a great way to celebrate Ellie's birthday
Their names are:
The mom is around 5 to 7 years old, while the baby is just a few months old, and they'll be welcoming another family member this fall when mama gives birth. The mom was on high alert at first, not knowing if she could trust us. She shielded the baby and wouldn't look us in the eye, but when we got them settled in their temporary barn with warm straw beds, fresh water, and a bale of organic grass hay, mama started to relax.
We told them how loved they are, sang to them, and asked the other cows to watch over them. The new mom could hear Maybelle and her babies, who have a very similar story, mooing behind the barn, but she hasn't yet met them. We're giving the new rescues time and space to decompress, but we know our herd will welcome them—cows are so inclusive and loving.
Your donations will go toward the care of these gentle beings along with our 200 rescued animals at The Gentle Barn's three locations, and our mission of teaching people kindness and compassion to animals, each other, and our planet. More great news: we have a $15,000 match from two generous donors, so any donation given during this time will be DOUBLED!
Thank you so much for your support. We're able to rescue families like this because of you!
