Inspiring Kindness and Compassion towards Animals, Our Planet, and Each Other

Half Way

Four months ago Jay and I went to an Engine 2 Immersion in Sedona, Arizona. We spent time exercising, eating whole foods, and listening to leading cardiologists, oncologists, internists, and nutritionists talking about how they are reversing disease in their patients with a plant-based, whole foods diet. Even in those five days, we lost weight, our blood pressure, and cholesterol levels went down, and we left feeling more motivated than ever to be healthy.

Just before the immersion, I was dealing with a health crisis that the doctors could not explain. They said I had a thickening of my uterus and could not tell me what was causing it. I was put on medication that was making me feel awful, and they kept saying that if I didn’t take the medication my condition would turn into cancer and I would have to have a hysterectomy. The personal effects on me aside, I didn’t have time for any of this! I was busy managing three locations, caring for hundreds of animals, traveling extensively, public speaking, driving my daughter around to dance after hours, and a health issue was the last thing I needed! I had been vegan for nineteen years, why was I sick at all?! Didn’t being vegan mean being healthy? I knew there must be an answer to what was creating this condition in me, and I knew there must be a healthier way to treat it. I was searching for answers.

I found those answers at the Engine 2 Immersion! Dr. Klapper was speaking in an afternoon lecture two days in, and I was riveted. He was talking about diet, nutrition, and western disease, and then he said that when we are overweight our body turns our fat into estrogen. That’s when it hit me: that is why I have a thickening of my uterus, that’s why I have an imbalance, because I have too much estrogen! Could it be that simple? I consulted with Dr. Klapper privately the next day and sure enough, he told me that my condition was just that simple; my body was turning fat into estrogen, and as soon as I start eating healthier and losing weight, I’ll be balanced and healthy. It seemed so crazy to me that this serious condition that the doctors feared would turn into cancer, was all about what I was eating! Wow!

It is now four months later, and Jay and I have eaten nothing but organic vegetables, organic fruit, and organic whole grains. We have had nothing processed, no oil, sugar, nuts, or salt. Jay has lost fifty pounds, and I have lost twenty-five pounds; we are half way to our end goal. We feel ten years younger, have so much more energy, and we are fitting in clothes that we have not worn in years. My condition is completely gone, and I am off all medication! I am a very private person when it comes to these things and I would normally not share such personal information, but the coloration between food and illness, and the connection between whole foods and health is so profound that I had to share it with you.

There are so many people who are sick and suffering, and their friends and families are suffering with them. Most of them don’t realize that health can be right around the corner. I was vegan for almost twenty years and assumed that I would automatically be healthy, but the truth is that eating processed food, oil, and sugar was making me overweight and ill. I believe that we are meant to eat out of the garden: fruits, vegetables, nuts and grains that are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. Food that is fresh. Western diseases are created from eating products that are white and brown: white sugar, white flour, and brown meat. But when we eat rainbows, and eat fresh, live foods from the garden, we thrive, we heal, and we cure ourselves! I’m getting younger, healthier, and slimmer with every day, and I cannot wait to see my new me once I lose the next twenty-five pounds. Our medicine truly is in the garden!
