Being a Momma Hen

Our new hen has been with us for a week now and has changed our lives forever. She sleeps in my hands during meetings, perches on my shoulder in the car, follows me all around the house, and cries for me in front of the shower door in the morning. I have to keep telling her that I am still there and that I will be right out.

We have named her Jasmine which means courageous, honest, determined, a leader for a cause. Wow, that’s her all right! She is so full of life and intelligence. She is proving to be just as affectionate as any puppy. She loves cuddling and will often hop onto my hands and lay down for a nap or just listen to whatever conversation I am having. I look into her eyes and I see intelligence. I hear her peep for me and I feel my heart expand as if she were my own baby. I look at her larger than life expression and I yearn for the world to see her, to know her, to realize that even though we all appear in different forms, we are all truly the same. When we finally adopt this truth, and realize that we are all one, and, act from that belief, really live from it, can you imagine the peace we will have on this planet?!

I have concerns for the environment, as well. I have concerns for our health. I have concerns for the animals of this world. And, lastly, I think that loving this tiny bird is the answer. If we could just open our eyes, our minds, our souls to this tiny bird and just love her, just be kind, just be gentle, and just stop eating her kind… what a world this could be for all of us. It is truly that simple!

Jasmine hosted her very first Open Sunday for visitors last week and handled the day like a champ. She allowed guests to hold her and made so many friends. Please come meet Jasmine when you have a chance, especially while she is still so small and adorable. You are guaranteed to fall in love!

"Because Animals is a small company with a big mission: to create nutritious pet food without ever harming any animals or the environment. We believe that factory farming has no place in pet nutrition, which is why all of Because Animals' products are made without slaughtering animals. "

"Our ultimate goal is to end the raising and slaughtering of farmed animals to feed our pets.
Until we get to that point, we are so very grateful there are sanctuaries like The Gentle Barn’s three locations to give refuge to abused, tormented, neglected and suffering animals who deserve so much more from the world."
