By Ellie Laks, Founder of The Gentle Barn
I started volunteering at the Gentle Barn shortly after my mom passed away. I had been taking care of her for about 9 months before she passed. I didn't want to go back to work and I was very lonely. I checked out the Gentle Barn and knew that's where I wanted to be. The animals in the barnyard and the volunteers are like my family. Ellie assigned me to Toulouse the sheep who had suffered the loneliness of losing her family. We fit together like a hand in a glove. We bonded quickly and she trusts me completely. We walk on a leash around the lower barnyard so she can get special treats. If I am out of her sight on Sundays she will bleat until I show up! Besides Toulouse I've had the privilege of loving and caring for Sundance our new little goat, while he healed. During the week I sing to the animals, and talk to them. I scratch all the piggy's, speak to the chickens one on one; and all of the wonderful animals that are there! I could go on naming them. My kids are thrilled that I'm finally doing something I love, like I did when I was a little girl. I love the Gentle Barn and the tenderness that is felt. The Gentle Barn heals and loves abused and injured animals, it also can heal an open, hurting, human heart.
