By Ellie Laks, Founder of The Gentle Barn
I (Ellie Laks) founded The Gentle Barn in 1999 and two years later Jay Weiner came to volunteer. After a year we fell in love, got married and now work side by side to save animals and heal at-risk, inner city and special needs children to create a more peaceful world for humans and animals alike. We have three children who have grown up with 170 furry brothers and sisters.
Our oldest daughter, Molli loves the animals and has volunteered for
many years in the barnyard and helps with animal rescues and has
specialized in helping us heal dogs. On Sundays, Molli is the special
docent to Grace the cow. Molli makes sure visitors approach her slowly
so she does not get scared, she brushes, hugs and pets her gently and
helps Grace know that at The Gentle Barn she is safe, respected and
loved. Molli tells Grace’s story and ensures that her feelings and her
words are heard. Since Molli started volunteering with Grace, Grace has
really blossomed, healed and found peace. Great job Molli, we are so
proud of you and grateful to have you here with us!
And Molli, if you didn't know already, we are grooming you to run a Gentle Barn of your very own!
