Exactly 6 years ago Jay and I took our family to a pumpkin patch. We didn’t know there were animals there, we just went to enjoy the music, food and pumpkins. While there we discovered a baby pig in a cage who looked very lonely and bored, so of course we spent the day feeding him and giving him tummy rubs through the bars. When we left at the end of the day we told the owner how much we had enjoyed his piglet, but he said that the pig wasn’t his and that the day after Halloween he would be picked up and taken to slaughter. The kids and I burst into tears and after crying for 5 days Jay saved the baby pig as a surprise for us.
Biscuit is now 1,000 pounds and always a gentle giant. He loves tummy rubs and at least once a day we bring him yummy treats like apples or bananas. Most farmed pigs don’t live past 3 or 4 years old because they are genetically modified to grow very big, very fast, so they can be slaughtered when they are only 6 months old. By the time they are fully grown their bodies are too big for their little legs to carry them. It is so sad because unmodified pigs in the wild can live 'til 25 years old, but farmed pigs are set up to fail from day one.
Biscuit takes his longevity very seriously and jogs around the barnyard every morning. With his fierce exercise routine and vegan diet he’ll probably live forever! If you can, come give Biscuit a tummy rub this month!
