Read Thor's Story (In Memoriam)
Thor was an impeccably trained Tennessee Walker. He carried his person wherever she wanted to go, and took his job seriously, with pride. He was never appreciated or thanked. He had a great sense of humor, nibbling with his mouth and throwing his head around to make people laugh. Sadly, he was reprimanded for it. He was very social and wanted to be with other horses. Tragically, he was kept alone in a twelve-by-twelve stall when he was not working. As a senior, Thor stumbled and fell. The veterinarian recommended that he retire, but he was ridden anyway, which created severe arthritis. In his twenties, Thor developed Cushing's disease, which required expensive daily medications. His parents wanted to throw him away and just get rid of him.
Thankfully, the barnhand, who cared for him, reached out to us, and we were able to bring him home to The Gentle Barn instead. After decades of Thor carrying people, it was now time for us to carry him! Thor thrived here! He ate fresh organic hay, slurped clean water, was groomed lovingly each day, gobbled up bedtime cookies each evening, and used his mouth to make us laugh. His personality blossomed! The best part was that he befriended all of our other horses, was never again alone, and even fell in love with our horse, Ruby. He had pals to play with and rested in the sunshine with the love of his life.
Thor spent his entire life caring for others. At nearly thirty years old, unheard of for such a large horse, Thor developed liver failure and was in pain. He did not want to eat, was frail, and the veterinarians had done all they could for him. He was holding on for his mate, Ruby, not wanting to leave or disappoint her. But we could not allow him to suffer. It was now time for us to take care of him and set him free. Thor left quickly, easily, and effortlessly, and we will forever be grateful for knowing him. He was a hero and a champion. He was selfless and generous. It was an honor to know and love him!
