Read Phoenix's Story (In Memoriam)
Phoenix was one of five chickens rescued from a slaughterhouse. They were left alive and the customers could pick out the one they wanted and then they were killed and purchased. We can only imagine how scary that must have been for them to be there knowing what would befall them. When we brought them home to The Gentle Barn they were scared of us, but with volunteers reading and singing to them they soon learned to trust us and see that people can be kind. Sadly chickens are genetically engineered to lay eggs earlier and more per day than the original chickens, so by the time they are full grown, they develop uterine problems. Phoenix passed away from inoperable tumors at the age of 3. We will miss her happy go lucky personality and her bright shiny light in our barnyard!
