Read Phoebe's Story ^{(In Memoriam)}

Phoebe was one of the most resilient animals we have ever met. Along with six other hens, Phoebe came to us as a dying man's last wish for his ladies to be safe and cared for. When we brought them back to The Gentle Barn we noticed right away that Phoebe was standing a bit funny, wasn't eating, and wasn't as active as the others. We took her to our avian expert and he performed one of the hardest and longest surgeries of his career, pulling twelve necrotic eggs from inside of her. Phoebe had a lengthy recovery but was soon back in the barnyard with her sisters exploring, dust bathing, and lounging in the sun as happy as can be. Phoebe helped our guests understand better what goes on in the egg and poultry industries and opened all of our hearts to the intelligence, affection, and magic of chickens. We were so grateful to have experienced the miracle of Phoebe's recovery, but sadly at the end of her life she got a blockage that the veterinarian could not repair and she ended up passing away suddenly. Phoebe will always be my hero, never letting anything bring her down, always positive, and forever sparkly, happy, and full of joy. We were thrilled to have known her, grateful to have loved her, and honored to have cared for her.
