Patsy the cow, living in sanctuary at The Gentle Barn California
Patsy (AKA Sunlight) was sent to slaughter pregnant and gave birth as she waited to be killed. In a miraculous act of compassion, the slaughterhouse owner allowed us to have them both and bring them back to The Gentle Barn. But because patsy was a first time mom, was terrified, and grieving the loss of her whole community, she did not make sure her daughter got enough colostrum and her baby was sick by the time she got to us the next day. Her baby had an infection in her gut which spread to her joints, making it painful to walk. And she had staph and E coli infections in her lungs making it hard to breath. Patsy was scared of us and protective of her baby, but she allowed us to treat her, imploring us with her huge eyes to save her. We tried everything, but she did not have enough of an immune system to recover. Sadly after three weeks, Patsy's baby passed away. Patsy was angry, sad, and grieving. But time heals all wounds and animals are so enlightened and wise, that she finally healed. Patsy is sweet, kind, gentle, and affectionate, and we'll always see her daughter's beautiful face in hers. Patsy will get to live a life filled with kindness and honor as part of our family for the rest of her life.
