Miles the cow, living in sanctuary at The Gentle Barn Tennessee
Miles’ mom Maybelle was used for dairy her entire life. In order for the family to drink the milk she produced, Miles had to be taken away from her and weaned early. When Maybelle was ready to be retired, we were able to bring her to The Gentle Barn to live with us instead of being slaughtered. We didn't know she had a baby at the time, but when we took her home, she kept crying and pacing. We went back to the farm and discovered Miles crying for his mom, and thankfully, we were able to bring him home to be reunited with his Maybelle.
When we brought him home and opened the doors to the trailer, he immediately ran to Maybelle as she licked him all over. Their reunion was one of the most special moments we’ve ever witnessed. Soon after Miles arrived, we realized Maybelle had been pregnant and she gave birth to Eclipse. The three of them now live together at The Gentle Barn Tennessee as a family, giving hope and inspiration to children who know what it feels like to lose family.
What we love about Miles the most is how kind and gentle he is, despite what he went through as a baby. He was chained and wasn’t allowed to nurse, and you’d think that would leave a scar but he doesn’t have an angry bone in his body. He’s so loving and affectionate, comes to us when we call him by his name, and loves getting brushes and scratches.
