Mercy the cow, living in sanctuary at The Gentle Barn California
Mercy was rescued from a veal farm at only a few weeks old. Taken away from his mom at birth, put into a crate so he could not move, fed inadequately, and left to die, our Co-Founder, Jay Weiner drove to Texas, went undercover, and brought Mercy and his three other calves home to The Gentle Barn, driving back twenty straight hours to get them the urgent life-saving medical attention they needed to save their lives. We had staff and volunteers take four-hour shifts with them all through the day and night to encourage them to want to live. We had our wonderful veterinarians give them the medicine and treatment they needed. Sun Chlorella algae superfood boosted their immune systems. It took several long months, but Mercy and his brothers recovered. Mercy grew up at our Sun Chlorella Healing Center to have the room and companionship that he needed. When his brother Roy needed more care, we moved them both to our main location to get acupuncture, high-calorie food, softer ground, and closer proximity to food, water, and shelter in their golden years. Mercy and Roy are gentle giants, exude love and gentleness to all of us, and we hope and pray that we will have them here with us for many more years.
