Karma was rescued from a cruelty case where she had no food, water, or shelter, and enormous stress. When we first brought her home she cried incessantly all through that first day and night. In the morning she was dripping milk and we finally figured out that she was crying for her baby. Through an amazing set of circumstances we were able to relocate the baby and reunite them. Unknown to us, she was pregnant and eight months later she gave birth to her second son. Karma raised her two boys at the Gentle Barn. They were always together either grooming each other, playing, or meditating. Sadly her sons were enormous and developed mobility issues which shortened their lives. Karma was there when both her sons passed away, with the entire bovine family encircling them, she whispered in their ears that she loved them and it was okay to go. Through knowing Karma and her sons, we were able to be witness to the sacred family and community that cows share, when allowed. Karma taught us that cows celebrate birth, mourn birth, and love each other just as we do. Unfortunately in the rest of the world animals are not allowed to have families or fall in love and stay together, but at our California location Karma will be a prized part of our family for the rest of her life.
