Geronimo the goat, living in sanctuary at The Gentle Barn California
Geronimo and his brother, Oreo were bought when they were kids to be companions to a lonely horse. Sadly the horse did not take to them at all. The family tried caring for the goats over the years, but worried that they needed more attention. Finally the people decided to rehome them, and we were asked to take them to ensure that they remained in safe hands. We had the room and welcomed them in with open arms.
Though they were loved, there are things that we were excited to do for them now that they are at The Gentle Barn. We are helping Geronimo gain weight by giving him plenty of fresh organic hay, and installing a heater in their room and thick straw bedding so they did not lose calories trying to stay warm. We are trimming his toenails making him more comfortable and helping him with his mobility. Geronimo is extremely affectionate and social so we are making sure he has lots of human attention every day and bedtime cookies every night.
Before coming to The Gentle Barn, Geronimo and his brother had never met anyone other than horses and people. It will take a while for them to acclimate to the other animals and feel completely safe in the barnyard. We are starting with them bonding to our other goats, Bria and Tina. Then we will gently introduce them to our sheep and llamas, first through a fence and then outside together. Getting used to the pigs will probably take the longest, and we will do it slowly and easily so they feel no pressure or fear. We are excited to have them and looking forward to when they are acclimated and fully enjoying their happily ever after.
