Read Bodhi's Story (In Memoriam)

Bodhi was on a truck with many other pigs headed for slaughter when he had the courage to jump off and save his own life. He thankfully was not harmed and found his way to The Gentle Barn where he became our family. Bodhi was gentle to the children we hosted, patient and kind with our guests, and he must have rolled over for at least 300,000 tummy rubs over the course of the 10 years we had him. It was an honor and a privilege to know him, love him, and care for him.

Because farm pigs are genetically engineered to get very big, very fast, so they can be slaughtered at 6 months old, by the time they are 3 and full grown, they are abnormally large. Later in life this causes mobility issues or heart failure. The body just cannot function at that enormous size. So instead of living till 20 like their wild counterparts, they usually pass away at 4 or 5. Bodhi thrived till 10 and for that we are grateful and ecstatic. He had heart failure, but we helped him out of his body so he didn't suffer and whispered to him how much we love him as he left. We will keep saving animals, teaching kids to be kind, and sharing his story so we can make a better world for pigs everywhere.
