Betty the cow, living in sanctuary at The Gentle Barn California
Betty was a "beef" cow who was impregnated over and over again and her babies taken away from her each year as she screamed for them. At about eight years old she was sent to slaughter pregnant so the farmer would get more money per pound. She gave birth at the slaughterhouse while she awaited slaughter. In a miraculous act of compassion, the owner allowed us to have them both to live together at The Gentle Barn. Because Betty was a seasoned and excellent mother, she was able to focus on the wellbeing of her daughter, even in the darkness, chaos, and trauma of the slaughterhouse. Because of Betty's dedication, her baby, Joyful Heart arrived at The Gentle Barn strong, healthy, and happy. Betty gets to finally raise, nurture, and keep her baby and live with her by her side for the rest of her life. For the rest of her days Betty and her daughter will get good food, clean water, a soft bed, and gentle hands; the life that all cows should live!
