Bert the pig, living in sanctuary at The Gentle Barn California
Bert was raised on a pig farm. The fences were inadequate and he would often break free to forage on sweet grass and roots in the shade and quiet of the surrounding fields. One day his adventures brought him to the edge of the road, a busy highway, a few miles from The Gentle Barn. A concerned neighbor feared for his safety and called us for help. When we arrived, we lured Bert with food, loaded him onto our trailer, and brought him home to the safety of The Gentle Barn. We later got permission from the overwhelmed owner to keep him.
Bert was rescued with another pig we named Ernie. They nap together, explore side by side, and gobble up pumpkins and other treats in tandem. Bert was shy at first, unsure of our intentions, but with time, patience and lots of love, he began to trust us. Today Bert is extremely affectionate and friendly, running to greet us and rolling over for belly rubs with the slightest touch. Bert is called a "mule pig": a very unique animal with one hoof on each leg instead of the typical split hooves that most pigs have. His long snout and long tail make him look like a fictional character and we have already fallen deeply in love with him! Bert and Ernie will live at The Gentle Barn for the rest of their lives and will always be safe!
