It is time this month to order new hay for our animal sweethearts!
Because our animals are mostly older, and we need to help them get plenty of calories, but we don't want to give them food that is too rich. We feed them organic grass hay with an alfalfa mix that is high in protein, but not too high in sugars. We used to have a lot of horses colic, which is basically a stomach ache in horses, but because horses cannot throw up, a stomach ache can be fatal. When we got new deliveries some of our cows got sick and didn't want to eat for a day or two. Since we switched to organic hay, we have not had any horse colics or cows with sour stomachs! Our senior animals keep their weight consistent and our few younger animals don't get too overweight; it's perfect!
Because we're in a desert and because of the drought, fires, and high gas prices, hay is very expensive in California. We have researched trucking it in ourselves, trucking it in from different states, and even growing it ourselves, but nothing seems like a good solution. Maybe one day we'll find a grower willing to donate and deliver, but in the meantime we need your help to purchase it. One bale of hay is $20, will you donate towards one so we can get a truckload?
We cannot possibly care for our 150 rescued animals or give people inspiration and hope without you. Together we can create a more peaceful world!
