By Ellie Laks, Founder of The Gentle Barn
Like many of the volunteers at the Gentle Barn Tennessee, I was a fan of the Gentle Barn in California before I ever dreamed that there would be a location opened in Knoxville. I was touched by the stories of the animals who found sanctuary at the Gentle Barn, and amazed that there were other people out there who cared just as deeply for the animals as I do. As I learned more about the harsh world that these animals came from, my conviction to stand by my newly adopted vegan lifestyle strengthened. I was also motivated to do something more and as I began to look into local volunteer opportunities, The Gentle Barn announced that they would be opening the Gentle Barn Tennessee in Knoxville. It was really a dream come true to have this organization with their incredible mission end up in my hometown.
My experience as a volunteer has been nothing short of amazing. I've been humbled by the animals and their ability to forgive, trust, and love again. I'm inspired by the Gentle Barn staff and volunteers who work together every day to give our animals the best lives they can live, and who advocate for a more compassionate world for humans and animals alike. I look forward to Saturdays when we are open to the public, and we are able to share the joy of giving belly rubs to Henry and Horton, brushing Dudley and Destiny, or feeding the horses, turkeys, and chickens. There's nothing like watching people connect with our animals and our people at the Gentle Barn.
I'm so grateful that the Gentle Barn is here in Knoxville, and that I have the opportunity to be a part of this family. I have no doubt that world is a kinder and more gentle place because of the work done here.
