Read Ginger's Story (In Memoriam)

We lost our sweet precious ginger this week. Ginger was already old when we rescued her 4 years ago from extreme cruelty. She was extremely sick when we brought her home and it took months till she recovered. But once she recovered she learned to trust and have a wonderful fresh start her at The Gentle Barn.

For the last year however, we have been treating Ginger for a reoccurring staph infection. The first time she recoverd pretty quickly and easily, but each time she got it it seemed worse and took her longer to heal. Our veterinarian explained to us that her immune system is shutting down because she is so elderly and has been through so much before we saved her.

This last round of staph has lasted several months and it wasn't healing. Ginger lost so much wait and was in pain. Our vet said that it would likely not ever heal because of her age and her compromised immune system. The infection was going into her bones and we never want our animals to suffer so we made the very difficult decision to gently help her out of her body.

Ginger was an amazing ambassador, a strong and loving mom, and our best friend. Thank you so much for loving her with us
