Read Chili's Story (In Memoriam)

Chili was rescued from a very bad East Los Angeles neighborhood where every house had a pure bread Pit Bull tied to a tree, and by the looks of the scars on their bodies it was clear that they were used for dog fighting. Chili was running the streets and was almost hit by a car when we spotted him, alone and afraid. We took him home, cared for him and taught him to trust people.

Chili was a big part of our humane education program where he taught inner city kids the importance of being kind to animals. He also, and most importantly, taught children that Pit Bulls are in fact sweet, affectionate animals just like any other dog, when raised with love, safety and understanding. He showed children how destructive prejudice can be, and how everyone deserves to be treated as an individual, and given a fair chance to be loved.

Chili loved people, and when he saw someone coming towards him he would squint his eyes, smile and wag his whole body in joy. He was a lover! Chili only lived until he was nine years old, but even in that short amount of time he impacted thousands of children. He was a Gentle Barn favorite. We miss him so much it hurts.
