Read Buttercup's Story ^{(In Memoriam)}

Buttercup was rescued from extreme cruelty where she had no food, water, or shelter. She was used as a dairy cow so every year she was impregnated, every year her babies were taken away as she cried, and her breast milk taken for people to drink. Even though she was treated like an object and suffered so much pain, when Buttercup came into the Gentle Barn she was grateful, gentle, and trusting. We found out a short time later that Buttercup was in the final stages of pregnancy, and we were overjoyed at the thought of her being finally able to raise and love a baby. Sadly because she had no prenatal care and was living under so much stress, the baby was born small, weak, and underdeveloped and only lived for seven months. In that short time she was a great mom and nurtured him with patience and told him it was ok when he passed away. She cried for a few weeks, and then determined to be a mom, Buttercup chose to adopt all the orphaned babies that we rescued at The Gentle Barn. Buttercup raised, loved, protected, and mothered over twelve baby
cows during her time with us. She was a fantastic mom to all of us, holding still for hugs, posing for pictures, and loving everyone who
came her way, human, bovine, or otherwise. As all great masters, Buttercup passed away quickly and easily when she was in her late teens. She will be missed sorely by everyone who knew and loved her.
